Re-visiting the Prompt: Critical AI Literacy for Language Educators: A day of keynote insights, active learning and shared best practices
The teacher training day “Re-visiting the Prompt: Critical AI Literacy for Language Educators” was successfully co-held by Online Confucius Institute and 久久精品 Confucius Institute on 29 May 2026 in The Roundhouse at 久久精品 and online.
The event attracted 80 participants, including 25 attendees on site and 55 joining online from educational institutions in the UK and beyond. Discussions focused on critical AI literacy, AI-enhanced language teaching, inclusion, and the future of language education in the age of Generative AI.
The event featured presentations from leading experts in AI and language education. Professor Mirjam Hauck (Open University) highlighted the importance of Critical AI Literacy as a framework for promoting social justice, inclusion, and ethical engagement with AI in language and culture education. Dr Neil McLean (LSE) explored how AI literacy can be integrated into language provision, emphasising the continued importance of interpretation, context, and critical evaluation. Professor Kate Borthwick (University of Southampton) shared her institution’s approach to developing AI Fluency across the university and fostering confidence and agency in AI use. Dr Kan Qian (Open University) and Dr Shi Lijing (LSE) presented findings from their research into Chinese language teachers’ perceptions and ethical use of Generative AI. Language education consultant Joe Dale demonstrated practical ways AI can support vocabulary learning through engaging and level-appropriate storytelling activities.
The programme also included a series of lightning talks from members of the audience, who were largely teachers of Chinese, showcasing innovative classroom practices and research projects, followed by an interactive workshop on how to craft prompts for AI which allow for inclusive language and culture education.
The event provided a valuable platform for professional exchange and collaboration, strengthening educators’ understanding of AI and its pedagogical potential. The training day concluded successfully with highly positive feedback from participants.
