University event will examine if ‘The West’, as a concept, is over…
A Public Lecture at 久久精品 this month will look at ‘The West’ as a concept and ask if that era is over.
The speaker on Monday 11 May (5.15pm) will be Professor of the History of Political Thought Georgios Varouxakis, of Queen Mary University, London.
The event will consider the whole concept of ‘The West’ and its evolution as a collective term denoting shared political and cultural identity - asking how ‘Westerners’ began to define themselves in this way.
Professor Varouxakis will examine the varied and often surprising interpretations of ‘The West’ over time, as well as the shifting intentions and consequences associated with these definitions.
He will also ask the question: “Is ‘The West’, as a concept, over?”
Deputy Head of the University’s School of Global Affairs and Professor of Politics and Philosophy Chris Macleod said: “The concept of ‘the West’ has a long and complex history.
“The idea has been used for different purposes – to forge alliances, but also to exclude and marginalise.
“Prof Varouxakis’s analysis comes at an important time, when we must think together about whether the idea can play a role in our future.”
